Gantt Chart History

Gantt chart was developed by Henry L. Gantt (1861-1919), an American engineer, in 1917. The first Gantt chart was created by Henry L. Gantt for planning building ships in the times of First World War. That chart had proved to be a powerful analytical instrument. Gantt chrat had been not changing for many years. But in 90s of the last century the link lines between tasks were added to the Gantt chart.

Although now considered standard practice, the introduction of the technique was considered quite revolutionary at the time. In recognition of his contributions, the Henry Laurance Gantt medal is awarded for distinguished achievement in management and service to the community.

Henry Gantt's contribution to the management process is honored today through the The Henry Laurence Gantt Medal. The award established in 1929 is given for distinguished achievement in management and for service to the community.
